Insurance and Billing for Medical Assistants

Course Description

This course introduces the theory, structure, and organization of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (Current edition) Clinical Modification (ICD-CM) coding systems. Emphasis will be on the application of coding principles to accurately assign CPT and ICD-10-CM codes to patient encounters in the medical record and on billing forms. Health Insurance, billing, reimbursement and financial management topics will also be covered. This course is for students pursuing a certificate or degree in Medical Assisting and not designed for those who want to become medical coders or billers in hospitals.

Prerequisites: HIT 111, BIO 111 or BIO 244 and BIO 245 (all C or better)
Corequisite: MOA 112 (C or better if already completed)
